Arriving in Marseille last night, we were off on another treasure hunt. It was quite difficult to find the place where the key to our apartment was hidden in a box with a code. Once we found the box, we took the key out, 2 blocks away was the accommodation itself. Once inside the building, the next obstacle was finding the right door that the key would open. We finally found the door, but just couldn't get the lock to open. Finally after about 1 hour of trying we got into the accommodation and everyone settled in. The owner sent a locksmith to fix the lock. The young people had a strong deterrent after the Milan incident and did not dare to leave the accommodation in the evening. They rested late the next day. In the morning we set off with a small group to buy breakfast. We were shocked to find the shelves of the larger shopping centres (Spar, carrefour, etc.) empty. We could barely find any gluten-free food, and in every shop we were met with puzzled looks as to what we were looking for. And to our biggest surprise, none of the shops were clean. Although the streets of Marseille were much cleaner than Rome or Milan. Here, the streets were washed at dawn and the rubbish swept away by machines.
Finally, we went shopping in a small bakery for a real French croason for breakfast. After breakfast we went for a long walk to the port of Marseille. Luckily for us, this was the Independence Day celebrations in Marseille and we were able to admire many military vehicles in the harbour. Afterwards, we took in Marseille's notre dam on the other side of the harbour, perched on a hilltop. Three of the group got tired and went back to the hostel, but the rest of us persevered and walked up the nearly 50° incline and up the many steps. The view was worth the effort. While visiting the church, 2 fighter jets passed overhead at the speed of sound at a height of a few hundred metres and for a moment everyone shrank from the horrible sound impact. We had never experienced anything like it. Afterwards, on our way down the hill, we were treated to a parade of 7 fighter jets, which we were delighted to be able to record on video. Dinner in the evening, followed by a paella and in the morning we set off for Zurich, the last stop on our journey.
