Disaster Awareness, Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness

During the Erasmus+ mobility project, we had the opportunity to gain insight into the fields of disaster management, emergency preparedness, and search and rescue operations. On the first day of the programme, we were introduced to the host organisation, the objectives of the project, and the basic principles of disaster management and civil protection.

We also took part in an introductory programme organised by AFAD, where we learned about rescue operations and disaster response procedures. At the end of the day, alongside the official programme, we attended a special community event near Çamlığı National Park, where we met local organisations and participated in joint activities.

The second day focused on practical preparation. We attended fire safety training, practised setting up emergency tents, and tried using various emergency and rescue tools, including equipment designed for locating people trapped under rubble. The programme concluded with a joint evaluation and discussion. As part of the cultural programme, we also visited the ancient Roman baths of Sarıkaya.

On the third day, we took part in rope-access and rescue exercises. We learned how to use different types of ropes and knotting techniques, followed by climbing and abseiling training. During the afternoon programme, we practised setting up a rope course and transporting a stretcher.

Throughout the day, we also developed our cooperation, communication, and problem-solving skills. In addition to the official activities, we visited the remains of the ancient city of Kerkenes, where we had the opportunity to experience the historical heritage of the region first-hand.

On the fourth day, the focus was on search and rescue tactics and methods for locating missing persons. We became familiar with the basic algorithm of search operations and then tested various search techniques and planning methods during field exercises. The practical tasks required us to work in teams while simulating real-life emergency situations.

On the fifth day, we participated in first-aid training and practical simulations, during which we practised responding to different emergency scenarios. As part of the programme, we also worked on community awareness-raising activities aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness. Throughout the day, we further developed our sense of responsibility, teamwork, and practical knowledge.

On the sixth and final day, we visited the Sorgun Youth Centre, where we took part in an exchange of experiences and a joint evaluation session. We summarised the knowledge and experiences gained during the mobility and discussed how we could apply what we had learned within our own communities.

To conclude the programme, we also explored the city of Yozgat, which provided a fitting end to a week full of experiences and valuable learning opportunities.

During the mobility, we gained not only professional knowledge, but also new friendships, international connections, and lifelong memories.
